The graphic-novel trend can be difficult for older generations to grasp, since the word "graphic" conjures up images of material that is anything but appropriate for kids. His pages seem to be drawn quickly and spontaneously, Mawil plays with styles, techniques and materials, he experiments a lot, takes risks, and reinvents himself constantly. Moore's intricately planned, complex reboot of the superhero genre may ultimately trip up over the pulpy melodrama of its climax.

Further, Y serves as a nice transition into a mini-unit on communication and the language of images. Newspaper comic strips were serialized fiction, comparable in many ways to the characteristically Victorian model of publishing novels in multiple parts, either in magazines or as independent publications.
