Experienced graphic novel readers use both text and images to decode the work, but those who are unfamiliar with the graphic format, will most likely just skim the book therby focussing "more on just the images themselves than the context of those images and [therefore] misinterpreting the intent of the artist and the author" (Downey, 2009, p. 181).
