These would be my kids, reading and the theatre – not necessarily in that order. The last decade has seen a real explosion in children’s books being adapted for the stage. Of course this is nothing new – we’ve always had the classic favourites: Peter Pan; Wind in the Willows, and, of course, fairytale pantomimes at Christmas (although I’m not sure that pantomimes can – or even would want to – be dignified with the word ‘adaptations’) http://macrohype.com/ebooks/g-i-joe-rise-of-cobra-official-movie-adaptation. They're generally fast paced, and the word-to-picture correlation provides an easy way to expand children's vocabularies. Perhaps more importantly, graphic novels tend to be more engaging than other "early reader" books. Another plus: the number of titles is expanding rapidly every year, so there's something for every child's interests , cited: http://legendevents.net/library/edgar-allan-poes-spirits-of-the-dead. Recommended for both private and public collections. Z-Girl and the Four Tigers, Issue #1 by Jeff Marsick and Kirk Manley In Z-Girl and the Four Tigers, Issue 0, readers were introduced to a secret government paramilitary unit led by Z-Girl, a zombie who is inhabited by a centuries-old tiger spirit , cited: http://fundelight.com/lib/horror-classics-graphic-classics-volume-ten-graphic-classics-eureka. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart , cited: http://studentsofpakistan.com/library/buckaroo-banzai-tpb-vol-1-return-of-the-screw. A 2006 study found that the amount of reading children did for fun decreased from the time they were eight through the teen years. Graphic books can re-engage them in the delights of reading for leisure as well as for learning. There are children who may never read for pleasure; God just might have wired them differently ref.: http://youthobserver.com/ebooks/the-wolfs-whistle-behind-the-tails. But amid all the comic-book and movie parodies (many of which could be excised without losing much), High Society tells a cohesive, nuanced story about a reluctant man of the people who gets thrust into the spotlight, and subsequently takes the people for all he can get. An adaptation would be an incredible challenge—and would likely have to wait until the prickly Sim dies—but given that High Society is one of the four or five greatest graphic novels ever published, it would be a shame if no one ever tried to expand its audience , cited: http://studentsofpakistan.com/library/injustice-gods-among-us-year-one-the-complete-collection.
Esther: They had a very well-rounded approach to the science. Which is why, I feel it’s such a strong science title (if not a strong comic title). The gazelle leaps slightly ahead of her, its hooves barely touching the grass. it is a blur of tan and white, with long, black-ringed horns; a creature not fully of the earth, but also of the sky , e.g. http://studentsofpakistan.com/library/astronauts-in-trouble-master-flight-plan. Hugh Dempsey, who researched the origins of the ‘‘Retreat up the Hill Battle’’ rock art, points out that in Bird Rattle’s account, the rock art was a supernatural warning discovered by the Piegan elders before the battle. The elders, according to Bird Rattle, successfully interpreted the painting, allowing the people to prepare for the attack and ultimately be victorious in their battle , source: http://studentsofpakistan.com/library/henry-aldrich-issues-21-22-golden-age-comedy-comics-vintage-comedy-and-humour-comics. "The graphic novel, I think, is the perfect medium for storytelling.. .. To read a graphic novel is to engage your imagination, to engage all five of your senses, and to picture what the creator dreamed. And that's what this book does for me." ― Harlan Ellison "Though they are set against the backdrop of a vast interstellar war, these stories are essentially about people; people who are never overwhelmed by the massive technologies of the Earth-Kyba conflict http://growthidea.co.uk/library/where-the-wild-things-rock-a-day-at-the-beach-with-picasso-the-king-who-stole-three-dreams.
