Deadline: 31 October 2013
Open to: amateur and professional photographers worldwide
Prizes: project grant worth €6,000
Medicos del Mundo have recently announced the call for the 17th Luis Valtuena International Humanitarian Photography Award, to denounce the situation of millions of people in the World.
The International Prize for Humanitarian Photography Luis Valtuena celebrates sixteen years. During this time, this contest has become an important referral for humanitarian photography at an international level, receiving more than 8,500 pictures from almost 3,000 photographers. Announced by Doctors of the World, this prize tries to foment the humanitarian and solitary values by the use of photography and serve, at the same time, as a testimony and denouncement of the situation in which disadvantaged populations find themselves.
This award comes as a tribute to and in recognition of Luis Valtuena, Flors Sirera, Manuel Madrazo, and Mercedes Navarro, Medicos del Mundo aid workers killed in Bosnia in 1995 and in Rwanda in 1997 while performing their duties as international humanitarian aid workers. Their memory serves to ensure that each year victims of injustice are brought to light. Give them a voice through your gaze. And in doing so, together, we can bring injustice to an end.
The competition is open to adult amateur and professional photographers of any nationality. Working members of Medicos del Mundo will not be able to participate in this competition.
Submitted entries must be related to any of the following themes: humanitarian action, international cooperation and social exclusion — human rights violations, armed conflicts, natural disasters, refugee and immigrant populations, socially excluded groups, etc. — and/or to efforts aimed at building a fairer, more egalitarian world.
The winner in the 17th Luis Valtuena Humanitarian Photography Award competition will receive a project grant worth 6,000 Euro to develop a photo project related to the work of Medicos del Mundo.
The winner will define the project’s objectives and further development jointly with Medicos del Mundo. The grant will cover all project expenses. Once terms of the project have been settled, Medicos del Mundo will not require proof of spending. The grant will be paid in three installments: 50% when the winner has been announced; 25% at the beginning of the project; and the remaining 25% at the end.
Photographs should be mailed before 31 October 2013 on a properly protected CD or DVD (in the two formats, as indicated above) with the entrant’s name identified, to the following address:
